Cigars. What are they really? Sure, smoke ’em if you got ’em, but I always wonder what draws me to a particular cigar. See what I did there? Perhaps it’s the fact that when you start smoking a great cigar, your mind starts to wander. When I smoke a cigar, I’m only doing one of two things. I’m either writing a novel, which by the way, my third one, SOUL HEELER, is finished and almost ready to be birthed into print, or I’m sitting outside with the girls (my two rescue dogs) by the river. Funny, how your mind tends to open up with a good cigar in your mouth. You can travel to another planet, ask your high school sweetheart out to the prom that you were too scared to do decades ago, decide how you’re going to spend all that money a rich uncle you never met left you, or write that best selling novel you’ve been thinking about for years – all in your mind. Amazing what a good cigar can do for you. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t play one on TV. I didn’t even save a lot of money with Geico Insurance, or stay at a Holiday Inn Express. So, as with anything that poses a risk, moderation is the key. Smoke cigars as you desire. And at your own risk. Just try not to inhale.
To me cigars are like people. I know what you’re thinking. That sounds very odd, doesn’t it? But I pick cigars like I pick people. Some are sweet, some are harsh. Some are thin, some are fat. Some are short, some are tall. Some have labels, some don’t care for labels. Some you feel more comfortable with than others. Some are Cuban, some are not (still talking about people – and cigars. Stay with me). Some are different colors (I’m colorblind when it comes to people, but with cigars, I’m a little choosy). Some are rough, some are smooth. Some are quite popular, some fade into the background and are just there. Do you see the similarities between cigars and people? Some are in good shape, some not so much. Some are really well put together , some are just thrown together. Some were born in other countries, some are from America. Some have really strange names, some have plain Jane, unassuming names. Some are in hot demand, some are not. Some are readily available, some are hard to find in a pinch. Do I need to go on? You get it, don’t you?
Cigars really are like people. I choose carefully and wisely. Maybe you should too. You know why? Because some burn out quickly and don’t last. But some stay with you for a long, long time. Those are the cigars…er the people that I choose. I’m just funny that way.
